Why Kyler Murray could be a sneaky sport card play in the upcoming weeks

Why Kyler Murray could be a sneaky sport card play in the upcoming weeks

Kyler Murray is the current QB for the Arizona Cardinals. After some initial offseason drama, Murray scrubbed the Cardinals off of his Instagram account, and some speculated that it could be for Muray in Arizona. Murray and the Cardinals seem to be over their offseason drama, and Murray is poised to lead the high-powered Cardinals offense again this year.

The cardinals recently picked up the fifth-year option on Murray's contract and traded for his ex-college teammate WR Marquise "Hollywood" Brown. Murray is extension eligible, and the Cardinals GM, Steve Kiem, recently alluded to extending Kyler Murray sometime between July and August. According to Bryan DeArdo from CBS.

All of the latest front office moves and speeches from the Cardinals organization indicate Murray will receive a substantial extension from the Cardinals sometime in the near future. Murray has won the 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the year and was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl in 2020.

The verdict is still out on whether Murray will become a consistent top 10 QB in the NFL for the next decade. Many anonymous sources have cited his poor attitude, and he is more of a "me" guy than a "team" guy. Murray also stands 5' 10", and many worry if he can not escape the pocket, he can have a hard time seeing downfield. Murray's small stature and running style also have some worried about his durability as he ages.

Murray also plays in the NFC West Division, which I would say is the toughest division in the NFC conference. Murray has to play the reigning Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams, San Fransico 49ers, and Seattle Seahawks twice a year. Not to mention Arron Rodgers and Tom Brady still play in the NFC Conference, which will undoubtedly make playoff success hard-fought for the Arizona Cardinals.

Despite these concerns, some believe Murray can still become a top 10 QB in the NFL. The Cardinal's defense is a solid unit, with many recent high draft picks peppering its ranks. The Cardinals have a stacked offense, especially when DeAndre Hopkins returns from his six-game PED suspension. All in all, the Cardinals should compete for a playoff seed in the NFC this upcoming NFL season.

I think Murray also gets lost in the shuffle of recent young QB studs. I believe this is primarly to be from the 2019 draft class Murray was a part of. The 2019 draft class features QBs such as Dwayne Haskins, Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Gardner Minshew. Out of all QBs drafted in the 2019 draft, Murray is the only one it seems who could have a great career. Every other QB drafted seems destined to become a backup QB at best.

The 2018 draft class was a juggernaut featuring Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson. The 2020 draft class has Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, and Tua Tagovailoa. While the 2021 draft class has exciting prospects in Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Mac Jones. Not to mention that new coming QBs from the just concluded 2022 draft class will begin to receive some attention from the card industry.

With the 2019 QB draft class being relatively weak and the surrounding draft classes featuring multiple young, exciting QBs, many of who have already had playoff success or accumulated awards. I feel these circumstances lead Murray to be the odd young QB out in the sports card market.

Murray's daily sales volume currently averages around $1000 per day, instead of other young QBs who average upwards of $2000 card sales per day. Murray may be a sneaky low play compared to other young QBs if people want to gamble on him.

My strategy would be to buy Murray's cards from now until he potentially signs a monster contract extension, which is predicted to come sometime in July or August.

Now, I would not hold those Kyler Murray cards; I would flip them in the earlier part of the upcoming season, especially if the Cardinal's offense looks sexy early on. Here is the only reason I would flip the cards and not hold them. The reason has nothing to do with if I believe Murray could become a top 10 QB or not.

The Cardinal's recent history is to start the first half of the NFL season with Murray as their QB on fire and even potentially fight for a top seed in the NFC. Then their play begins to tail off near the end of the season, and the Cardinals must fight for a Wild Card Playoff seed.

The Cardinal's late-season collapses would lead me to get rid of my Murray cards early on in the NFL season.

Peronsally, I own three to five Murray cards as of now. But I am very much considering following my own advice and scooping up some Kyler Murray cards in the upcoming weeks to hopefully sell for profit three to four weeks into the 2022 NFL season.
